Aesop

6th century BC

Aesop is the most famous fable-teller of ancient Greece. According to Herodotus he lived in the sixth century BC as a slave on the island of Samos and was later freed. Many legends gathered around him: that he was ugly but brilliantly witty, that he served as an envoy for kings, and that he died at Delphi on a false charge. The hundreds of fables that bear his name tell, through foxes, lions, crows and tortoises, the ways of the human world; retold and enlarged by generation after generation, they are among the most widely known stories on earth.
