Apuleius

c. AD 124–170

Apuleius was born about AD 124 at Madauros in Numidia, in present-day Algeria. He studied at Carthage, Athens and Rome, read Platonic philosophy and was initiated into several mystery cults. Travelling through Oea in North Africa, he married a wealthy widow, and her relatives accused him of winning her by magic. His witty and learned defence speech, the Apology, survives, and he evidently won the case. He later settled in Carthage, where he became a celebrated orator and philosopher.
