Introduction
What is the final goal of human life? Aristotle's answer is happiness, eudaimonia: the activity of the soul in accordance with virtue, over a complete life. He distinguishes virtues of intellect from virtues of character, understands courage, temperance, generosity and justice as a mean between two extremes, and holds that virtue is formed by habit. With its discussions of justice, weakness of will, pleasure and friendship, and its closing praise of the contemplative life, it is the most influential work of ethics in the Western tradition.
