Introduction

After the epics, Greek poetry turned to the individual voice. This volume gathers Sappho's surviving poems and principal fragments, including the complete Hymn to Aphrodite and her famous poem of jealousy and longing, together with representative work by Alcaeus, Archilochus, Anacreon, Pindar and other lyric poets. They sing of love, friendship, drinking, war, exile and the passing of time; many survive only in a few lines, yet still strike with immediate force, and they shaped the whole lyric tradition from Catullus to the modern poets.
