Introduction

From 431 to 404 BC the two great alliances led by Athens and Sparta fought a war of twenty-seven years that ended in Athens' defeat. Thucydides called his history 'a possession for all time'. It contains Pericles' famous funeral oration, an eyewitness account of the plague at Athens, a cold analysis of civil strife at Corcyra, the Melian dialogue on power and justice, and the destruction of the Sicilian expedition. It remains essential reading in political science, international relations and strategy.
