Arrian

c. AD 86–160

Arrian was born about AD 86 at Nicomedia in Asia Minor, a Greek of the Roman Empire. As a young man he studied at Nicopolis with the Stoic philosopher Epictetus and wrote down his teacher's lectures as the Discourses and the Handbook, through which Epictetus' thought has come down to us. He then entered Roman public life, serving under Hadrian as consul and as governor of Cappadocia, where he led an army that drove back an invasion of the Alans. In later life he wrote in Athens; his chief work is the Campaigns of Alexander, based on the eyewitness accounts of Alexander's officers.
