Boethius

c. AD 477–524

Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius was born about AD 477 into a great senatorial family of Rome, as the Western Empire fell. A man of immense learning, he set out to translate the whole of Plato and Aristotle into Latin, and his translations of and commentaries on Aristotle's logic were the main source from which Western Europe learned logic for the next six hundred years. Under Theodoric, the Ostrogothic king, he rose to consul and master of offices, but was falsely accused of treason, imprisoned without trial and executed about 524. In prison he wrote The Consolation of Philosophy.
