Euripides

c. 480–406 BC

Euripides was born in Athens about 480 BC, the youngest and most 'modern' of the three great tragedians. He made the heroes of myth speak the language of ordinary people, explored the inner lives of women, slaves and foreigners, and sharply questioned traditional religion and war. In his lifetime he won only five victories and was often mocked by the comic poets, but later ages made him the most popular of the tragedians, and eighteen of his plays survive. Late in life he left Athens for the Macedonian court, where he died about 406 BC.
