Introduction

Plotinus paints a vast picture of the universe: all things flow from the One, which is beyond all things, first Intellect, then Soul, and last the material world; and the human soul can climb back up this ladder and, in a moment of ecstasy, become one with the One. His pupil reports that he reached this state four times in his life. This volume translates the most important and most beautiful treatises of the Enneads, including On Beauty, On the Three Primary Hypostases and On the Good or the One, with famous essays on happiness, providence and the origin of evil.
