Suetonius

c. AD 69–122

Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus was born about AD 69. A scholar and biographer and a friend of the younger Pliny, he held high posts under the emperors Trajan and Hadrian as keeper of the libraries and secretary of the imperial correspondence, which gave him access to the palace archives, including letters in Augustus' own hand. He was later dismissed by Hadrian, reportedly for a lack of respect towards the empress. He wrote on many subjects, from grammar and rhetoric to famous courtesans, games and dress, but only the Lives of the Twelve Caesars survives complete.
