Vyasa

Vyasa is among the most revered sages of the Indian tradition. He is said to have arranged the four Vedas and composed the Mahabharata, at a hundred thousand couplets the longest epic in the world; the name Vyasa means 'the arranger'. He also appears in the epic himself, as grandfather of the Kauravas and Pandavas whose war it tells. Modern scholars hold that the Mahabharata grew through the additions of many generations of poets between the fourth century BC and the fourth century AD, and that Vyasa stands above all for this great tradition. The Bhagavad Gita forms part of the sixth book of the epic.
