Introduction

The Oresteia, first performed in 458 BC, is the only Greek tragic trilogy to survive complete. In the Agamemnon the king, returning in triumph from Troy, is murdered by his wife Clytemnestra; in the Libation Bearers their son Orestes avenges his father by killing his mother; in the Eumenides Orestes, pursued by the Furies, comes to Athens for judgement, and the goddess Athena founds a court that replaces blood vengeance with trial. The volume also includes Prometheus Bound, in which the Titan who stole fire for humankind is chained by Zeus to a crag in the Caucasus and refuses to submit.
