Hesiod

7th century BC

Hesiod, the early Greek poet named alongside Homer, lived around 700 BC and is the first poet in Greek literature to speak in his own name about his own life. He tells us that his father moved from Asia Minor to the poor Boeotian village of Ascra, and that he himself was a shepherd below Mount Helicon when the Muses gave him the gift of song. His Theogony sets the genealogy of the Greek gods in order, and his Works and Days is a didactic poem on labour, justice and farming.
