Theogony and Works and Days
Forthcoming The translation of this work is in preparation and will be published in the library.
Introduction
The Theogony tells the origin of the world and the gods: from Chaos come Earth, Night and Eros; the sky god Ouranos is overthrown by his son Kronos, Kronos in turn by Zeus, who defeats the Titans and establishes an ordered rule. It is the earliest and most systematic account of Greek myth. Works and Days is the poet's admonition to his brother Perses: it contains the story of Pandora, the myth of the five ages of humankind and a farmer's calendar through the seasons, and insists again and again that only work and justice bring a good life.
