Introduction

Besides On the Shortness of Life, Seneca wrote eleven short philosophical treatises addressed as letters to friends and family, known as the Dialogues. This volume contains the most important of them. On Anger is the fullest ancient analysis of that passion, teaching how to prevent and calm it; On the Happy Life answers those who charged him with praising poverty while being rich; On Tranquillity of Mind diagnoses the restlessness and boredom modern readers know well; and On Providence asks why, if there is providence, bad things happen to good people.
