Sextus Empiricus

2nd century AD

Sextus Empiricus lived around the end of the second century AD. He was a physician of the Empiric school of medicine, from which his name comes. Almost nothing is known of his life, but he is the only representative of ancient scepticism, Pyrrhonism, whose works survive complete. Rediscovered and translated into Latin in the Renaissance, his books deeply influenced Montaigne, Descartes, Hume and the whole of modern epistemology.
