Introduction

The sceptic says neither 'we can know the truth' nor 'we cannot', but suspends judgement, and through this finds peace of mind. The Outlines of Pyrrhonism is the most systematic account of this philosophy. The first book explains what scepticism is and how it differs from other schools, and sets out the famous Ten Modes and Five Modes, methods of argument for setting any claim against its opposite with equal force; the other two books examine in turn the dogmatic theories of logic, physics and ethics and expose their difficulties.
