Memorabilia and Apology of Socrates
Forthcoming The translation of this work is in preparation and will be published in the library.
Introduction
Besides Plato, Xenophon is the other pupil who left a record of their teacher Socrates. The Memorabilia opens by refuting the two charges that brought Socrates to his death, impiety and corrupting the young, and then records many of his conversations with friends, students, generals, artists and even a famous courtesan, on self-control, friendship, family duty and the art of government. Xenophon's Socrates is plainer and more practical, a portrait that complements Plato's. The volume also includes Xenophon's own Apology of Socrates.
