Hippocratic Writings: The Oath, Aphorisms and Other Treatises
Forthcoming The translation of this work is in preparation and will be published in the library.
Introduction
'Life is short, the art long, opportunity fleeting, experience treacherous, judgement difficult.' The opening of the Aphorisms sums up all the hardship of medicine. This volume translates the most important texts of the Hippocratic Corpus: the Oath sworn by those entering the profession; the four hundred Aphorisms on disease, prognosis and treatment; Airs, Waters, Places, on how climate, water and geography shape health and national character; On the Sacred Disease, which denies that epilepsy is divine; and On Ancient Medicine and Prognosis, among others. These writings mark the birth of rational medicine.
