Parallel Lives (Selections)
Forthcoming The translation of this work is in preparation and will be published in the library.
Introduction
Plutarch paired the great men of Greece and Rome, wrote their lives and compared them: this is the Parallel Lives. He said he was writing not history but lives, for a jest or a small gesture often reveals character better than battles in which thousands fall. This volume translates the most famous of them, including the lawgivers Solon and Lycurgus, the statesman Pericles, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar and Cicero. Shakespeare drew almost all his Roman plays from this book.
