Introduction

In 401 BC more than ten thousand Greek mercenaries followed the Persian prince Cyrus the Younger deep into Mesopotamia to seize his brother's throne. Cyrus was killed at Cunaxa, the Greek generals were lured to their deaths, and the army was trapped in the heart of the enemy's country. The young Xenophon, elected one of the commanders, led them north through the Kurdish mountains and the snowfields of Armenia until, at the sight of the sea, the soldiers cried 'Thalatta! Thalatta!' It is the first military memoir in the West written by a participant, and a classic of leadership.
